The Role
Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations this position has the primary responsibility of providing Labour Relations and Analytical support to all levels of management at Algoma Steel and acts as the day-to-day liaison/partner between Human Resources (HR) and the rest of the organization for Labour Relations.
Key Deliverables
- Advise and assist managers, supervisors, employees and the HR team on the interpretation and application of the collective agreements, employment legislation, employee conduct rules and other relevant employment issues.
- Use multiple databases (e.g. SAP, Access, ISN) and perform data mining using advanced excel.
- Identify opportunities and effectively analyze data with an intent to gather sufficient information to quantitatively justify changes or improvements.
- Track, monitor, and trend performance using metrics and key performance indicators.
- Provide timely and accurate counsel to managers, supervisors and the HR Business Partners (HRBPs) on issues related to the administration of the grievance procedure and provide proactive assistance to identify and resolve employee concerns to pre-empt grievances.
- Lead processes and provide coaching on all matters including but not limited to performance management, attendance management, conflict resolution, problem-solving and discipline.
- Partner (provide guidance) with client groups on various HR processes such as workplace redesign, organizational structure, lines of sequence, scheduling, health and safety.
- Prepare for, support and attend arbitration cases.
- Assist in contract negotiations by researching issues and providing relevant information and support throughout the process. Develop bargaining proposals in real time as disputes arise.
- Member of various joint committees including Seniority and Union-Management Committees.
- Will become an expert on Algoma Steel’s collective agreements.
- Create training decks and lead training sessions/focus groups.
- Lead special projects as required.
- Must stay current with employment legislation and arbitral case law.
Core Competencies and Skills Required
- Must have a University degree or college diploma in Business or a related field, with specialization or additional coursework in Human Resources or Analytics.
- Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to conduct yourself professionally and strategically with clients, union stakeholders, legal counsel project managers and other parties to effectively implement change.
- Ability to comprehend technical contract language including collective agreements, letters of agreement and manuals.
- Demonstrated initiative and the ability to drive issues to resolution.
- Working knowledge of the Labour Relations Act, the Employment Standards Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Human Rights Code is considered an asset.
- Experience in a unionized environment, including collective agreement administration, conflict resolution, grievance management and arbitration preparation is considered an asset.
- Experience in advising, training and supporting key organizational stakeholders on collective agreement language is considered an asset.
- Appreciates the importance of data, with experience in analyzing and preparing it.
- Enthusiastic about driving, leading and facilitating process improvements.
- Computer skills, including experience with Outlook, Word, Excel (advanced) and HRIS. Experience with SAP is an asset.
