For the past 33 years, My Friend’s House in Collingwood has been a lifeline for local women and children in need. The shelter offers a safe and nurturing environment for those escaping abusive situations, providing the support they need to rebuild their lives.
My Friend’s House provides beds, meals and a number of programs and services, including talk therapy, counselling, legal support, and child and youth programs.
In recent times, My Friend’s House has experienced a notable increase in calls to its support line, highlighting a growing need for community awareness and assistance. This past year, the shelter handled a total of 4,572 calls, compared to 3,926 calls the previous year and 3,354 calls the year before that
This surge underscores the crucial role the organization plays in providing support to local women and children affected by domestic abuse.
To address this pressing need and raise funds, My Friend’s House hosts multiple community events each year. "The Ultimate East Coast Kitchen Party” is next on the calendar.
Scheduled for May 14, 2025, at the Harbour Street Fish Bar in Collingwood, the evening promises a vibrant celebration featuring East Coast-inspired food stations, high-energy Celtic music from Strange Potatoes, a silent auction and a 50/50 draw. Attendees are encouraged to bring cash for participation in the draw.
“Funding is always our biggest issue,” said Jodi Petitpas, senior development & communications manager at My Friend’s House. “The funding we receive doesn’t increase each year , and it only amounts to about 45 per cent of what we actually need to operate - and that number keeps increasing. The rest of our funds are raised through community fundraising efforts.”
“This year, we need to raise just over $800,000 to continue operating as we are right now,” she shared. “We’re hoping people come out to support My Friend’s House while enjoying a fun evening of camaraderie and friendship.”
