The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 34 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in today's update.
There are currently 431 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
According to the health unit, 205 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by 14 cases since last report. There are seven active cases confirmed as the B.1.1.7 strain.
There are also 378 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant), which is up by 40 cases since yesterday. There are 134 active cases that have screened positive as a variant of concern.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,554 cases of COVID-19 with 5,880 of those cases recovered and 189 cases ending in death.
There are 18 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. This includes one new hospitalization since yesterday.
The health unit has administered 44,078 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Collingwood (1): A youth under 18 years old whose case is attributed to community transmission. An outbreak at a local apartment building has now been declared over. There were 25 confirmed cases linked to the outbreak, and several were confirmed as the B.1.1.7 variant strain.
- Clearview (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old whose case is attributed to close contact. This case was reported to the health unit in January but was reported publicly for the first time today
- Barrie (21): A youth under 18 years old, 14 people between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and two women and three men between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are outbreak-related, and eight are linked to close contact.
- Innisfil (1): A man between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (2): A woman and a man between 18 and 34 years old.
- Orillia (1): A youth under 18 years old.
- Penetanguishene (1): A woman between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Tay (3): A woman and two men between 18 and 34 years old.
- Essa (2): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is linked to close contact, and a woman between 65 and 79 years old whose case is attributed to community transmission.
- New Tecumseth (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
