The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 36 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its update today.
The death reported today was a Bradford woman between 45 and 64 years old who died on Feb. 23. Her case is considered "sporadic" and not linked to any outbreaks.
There are currently 522 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
According to the health unit, 182 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by eight cases since last report.
The eight confirmed variant cases were previously reported as cases and have now been confirmed B.1.1.7 variant cases. They include two at an apartment building in Collingwood, one from Roberta Place long-term care home and one secondary contact to Roberta Place, one at Bradford Valley Care Community and three sporadic cases not linked to any outbreaks.
There are also 276 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant), which is up by 13 cases since yesterday.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,362 cases of COVID-19 with 5,606 of those cases recovered and 188 cases ending in death.
There are 20 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There has been one additional hospitalization reported since yesterday's update.
The health unit has administered 37,208 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 15,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine, including more than 90 per cent of the region's long-term care residents.
There are seven ongoing outbreaks at health care facilities in Simcoe County including Grove Park long-term care home in Barrie, Bradford Valley care Community, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Penetanguishene), Bayshore Transitional Care Unit (Barrie), Sara Vista long-term care home in Springwater, Leacock Care Centre in Orillia, and Tudhope Manor Retirement Residence in Orillia.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Barrie (18): One youth under 18 years old, 11 individuals between 18 and 34 years old, one woman between 35 and 44 years old, one woman and one man between 45 and 64 years old, and one woman between 65 and 79 years old. There are also two Barrie cases without any identifying information. Six cases are linked to close contact, three are attributed to community transmission, and one is outbreak-related.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (6): Two men and a woman between 35 and 44 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old, and a woman and a man between 65 and 79 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission.
- Oro-Medonte (2): A man between 35 and 44 years old and a man over 80 whose case is outbreak-related.
- Essa (2): A man between 35 and 44 years old and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (1): A youth under 18 whose case is linked to close contact.
- New Tecumseth (3): A youth under 18, a woman between 18 and 34 years old, and a man between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- There are four new cases in Muskoka including two in Muskoka Lakes, one in Bracebridge, and one in Huntsville.
