The County of Simcoe is reinstating its curbside clothing and electronics collection services in September.
The county originally planned its clothing collection program in June, but postponed the service due to the pandemic.
According to a news release issued by the county today, clothing collection will take place between Aug. 31 and Sept. 11.
You may have received a clear pink bag in the mail already marked for the clothing collection program. You can put textiles in there and put them on the curb, and/or you may put materials in clear plastic bags that are sealed. Materials must be dry and clean.
The county will collect used textiles in good or poor condition as long as they are odour free. They will also accept towels, linens, pillows, coats, outerwear, hats, belts, scarves, purses, bags, sleeping bags, shoes, socks and mittens. Mittens must be tied together with an elastic to keep them in pairs.
Do not include wet items, single shoes, socks or mittens, dirty items small fabric scraps or garbage in the clothing collection bags.
According to the county website, textiles collected through this program are sorted and some are sent for reuse in Ontario and internationally. Some of the material is used for rags and acoustic fill. The county claims 98 per cent of the material collected is able to be reused or recycled.
Clothing will be collected from Collingwood curbs during the week of August 31 to Sept. 4. You must place the clothing on the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday.
Electronics collection will occur in Collingwood on the week of August 14 to 18. You will (or have) also receive bags for electronics, and you can put them in clear plastic sealed bags on the curb.
Acceptable items for electronics collection include computers, monitors, printers, televisions, cell phones, video gaming consoles, small appliances, personal care items, cords and small corded power tools. You can not include disks, coffee pots, light bulbs, toys, large appliances or batteries in the electronics collection program.
In related recycling news, the county has issued a notice for the public to properly breakdown cardboard and recyclable packaging so it can be collected during curbside pickup. Instead of placing overflowing bins at the curb, put extra items in clear bags, a recycling box or other containers (about the size of a large blue bin). Cardboard can also be flattened and tied into bundles (maximum size 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm) and placed beside your recycling box.
The county is not currently offering its bulky collections service due to COVID-19.
