COVID-19 claims life of Clearview Township woman

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported four deaths and 15 new cases of the coronavirus today

A person from Clearview Township has died as a result of COVID-19, according to the health unit.

The woman in her 80s died on May 8 at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.

Hers is the first COVID-19 related death reported in Clearview.

The death was reported today along with three others in Simcoe County.

The local health unit reported a woman in her 70s, a resident at Owen Hill Care Community, died on May 9. A Bradford Valley Care Community resident, a man in his 90s, died on May 10. A man in his 70s from New Tecumseth died on May 9 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is also reporting 15 more cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the region since Friday.

Among the new cases are five new cases in Barrie, four of which are related to a long-term care outbreak. One staff member, a woman in her 20s, as well as a woman in her 50s, a woman in her 70s, and a woman in her 90s, have all been confirmed positive for the coronavirus. The other Barrie case is a man in his 40s who is believed to have caught the virus through close contact.

Another resident (a man in his 70s) of Bayview Retirement Home in Waubaushene (Tay) has been confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is the second resident at the facility to test positive for the coronavirus.

There are six more cases reported in Bradford West Gwillimbury, with a woman in her 40s (close contact), a a woman in her 20s (community-acquired), a man in his 50s (under investigation), a woman in her 20s (close contact), a man in his 40s (under investigation), and a woman in her 30s (under investigation) among the latest confirmed cases.

The remainder of the cases reported by the health unit today include three people from New Tecumseth and one woman in her 20s whose location has not been reported.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has confirmed 375 cases of COVID-19 in the region, including 189 recoveries and 29 deaths.

The breakdown of cases in each municipality is as follows:

Barrie (123 cases, 61 recoveries, 8 deaths, 1 in hospital), Bradford West Gwillimbury (86 cases, 32 recoveries, 11 deaths, 2 in hospital), New Tecumseth (29 cases, 17 recoveries, 2 in hospital, one death), Orillia (15 cases, 10 recoveries, 2 deaths), Collingwood (11 cases, 7 recoveries, 1 in hospital), Innisfil (28 cases, 13 recoveries, 1 in hospital), Springwater (6 cases, 4 recoveries, 1 death), Midland (6 cases, 5 recoveries), Wasaga Beach (11 cases, 5 recoveries, 1 death), Oro-Medonte (5 cases, 2 recoveries, 2 deaths, 1 in hospital), Adjala-Tosorontio (7 cases, 5 recoveries), Clearview (6 cases, 2 recoveries, one death), Essa (7 cases, 5 recoveries, 1 death), Ramara (5 cases, 2 recoveries), Tiny (2 cases, all recovered), Tay (3 cases, 1 in hospital), Penetanguishene (2 cases, all recovered), and Severn (3 cases) for a total of 355 cases in Simcoe County, including 174 recoveries.

There are also 18 confirmed positive cases in Muskoka, and 15 have recovered, one person from Muskoka Lakes has died.

The case rate (including lab-confirmed cases only) for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 62 cases per 100,000 population. The provincial average is 138.2 cases per 100,000 population.
