The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reported one new case of COVID-19 out of Clearview today, and there is a Collingwood resident now in hospital with COVID-19.
The Collingwood person hospitalized is not a new case, but one of the existing 11 residents who previously tested positive for the coronavirus. Of those eight have already recovered.
According to the health unit, the newest Clearview case is a woman in her 30s who acquired the virus through close contact with another case.
She is the seventh case reported out of Clearview, two people have recovered and one person, a woman in her 80s, has died.
Ontario has reported 329 new COVID-19 cases today as well as 454 recoveries and 40 deaths.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $1 billion regional relief and recovery fund for the tourism sector and seasonal businesses today. The province’s state of emergency has been extended to June 2.
Georgian Bay Family Health Team reports some higher daily testing numbers for a few days in May so far. The family health team is also sending teams into local long-term care facilities to test staff and residents. So far testing is complete at Bay Haven Care Community, Collingwood Nursing Home and Creedan Valley in Creemore.
Testing is also well underway at Grey County nursing homes, which remain COVID-free.
Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority announced today it will be reopening its conservation areas on Friday, but only walking trails are opening. Buildings and bathrooms will remain closed for now.
With 11 new cases reported in Simcoe County today, and slightly higher than average daily case increases last week, the region’s medical officer of health, Dr. Charles Gardner, is concerned the case instance curve is trending in the wrong direction.
Gardner said we’re in a plateau and need to be as careful as ever to reduce the spread of the virus.
The health unit continues to use analog methods (think old-fashioned phone calls) to trace contacts of known COVID-19 cases in the region. Dr. Gardner said they’re more controllable than new technologies such as tracing apps.
Simcoe County announced it would be re-opening the Collingwood landfill in two weeks, beginning May 26. The Tenth Line location will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
