The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 29 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths in today's update.
There are 416 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
According to the health unit, 217 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by one case since last report.
There are six active cases confirmed as the B.1.1.7 strain.
Since extra testing is required to confirm variant strains, the delay in results can sometimes mean a case is recovered before it is confirmed as a variant strain.
There are also 401 cases that have screened positive as variants (awaiting confirmatory testing to determine which variant).
There are 144 active cases that have screened positive as a variant of concern.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,618 cases of COVID-19 with 5,958 of those cases recovered and 189 cases ending in death.
There are 19 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19.
The health unit has administered more than 45,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Collingwood (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old.
- Wasaga Beach (1): A man between 18 and 34 years old.
- Clearview (1): A woman between 35 and 44 years old whose case is linked to close contact.
- Barrie (7): Three men and a woman between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and a man and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Springwater (2): A woman between 45 and 64 years old and a woman aged 80 or above. One case is reported as community transmission.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (6): Three youth under 18, a man and a woman between 45 and 64 years old, and a man aged 80 or older. One case is outbreak-related.
- Innisfil (2): A man and a woman between 18 and 34 years old. One case is community-acquired.
- Orillia (1): A woman between 35 and 44 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
- Penetanguishene (1): A man between 35 and 44 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
- Severn (1): A man between 45 and 64 years old.
- New Tecumseth (1): A woman between 35 and 44 years old.
- Essa (3): A woman between 18 and 34 years old, and a woman and a man between 35 and 44 years old. One case is outbreak-related.
- There are two new cases in Muskoka, one is in Bracebridge and one is in Huntsville.
