Safety Reminders for Back-to-School Season

As we enter the busy back-to-school season, our roads are becoming busier with students, school buses, and crossing guards returning to their posts. It’s important that we all take extra precautions to ensure everyone’s safety, including our dedicated crossing guards who play a vital role in protecting our community’s children.

Safety Tips for Drivers:

  • Slowdown in school zones: Always obey posted speed limits, especially in school zones. These areas often have reduced speed limits during school hours.
  • Be alert for crossing guards: Crossing guards are there to ensure children cross safely. Always stop when a crossing guard is in the crosswalk and follow their signals.
  • Watch for children: Children may be unpredictable and can suddenly dart into the street. Be extra vigilant, especially near school zones, playgrounds, and residential areas.
  • Stop for school buses: It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing. Always stop when a school bus is picking up or dropping off children.
  • Parking regulations: Be mindful of parking regulations around schools. Illegal parking can block sightlines and create dangerous situations for children and crossing guards.
  • Distracted driving: Distracted driving is one of the leading cause of accidents. Ensure you are fully focused on the road, free from distractions like cell phones or other devices.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians:

  • Pedestrian Right-of-Way: Pedestrians (including crossing guards) have the right-of-way at crosswalks and pedestrian signals. Drivers must yield to pedestrians crossing the road within these areas.
  • Safe crossing practices: Always use designated crosswalks when crossing the street to ensure you are visible to drivers. Avoid crossing the road at non-designated points, even if it seems convenient.
  • Awareness when walking, running, or biking: Stay alert and avoid distractions like using earbuds or looking at your phone. Be mindful of your surroundings and listen for approaching vehicles or cyclists, who may come up quickly from behind.
  • Make eye contact with drivers: Always try to make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street, even at crosswalks. This helps to ensure the driver sees you and is prepared to stop. Never assume the driver will stop unless you have clear acknowledgement from them.

As we head into the busy back-to-school season, let’s all commit to being more aware and cautious on the roads. Remember, “Don’t assume you’re safe. Know it!”.
