Misfits Bodega serves sandwiches on Simcoe

Chef Ali Grundman welcomes you to try 'The Clerb'

Chef Ali Grundman was looking for a good sandwich in Collingwood, so she opened up her own sandwich shop in November.

Misfits Bodega at 65 Simcoe St., unit 2 is a classic sandwich shop with a chef's twist.

"I think we make the best sandwiches and if you are interested in getting an excellent sandwich, you should come to Misfits Bodega," Grundman said.

Misfits makes fresh sandwiches, salads, soups and cinnamon rolls every single day.

"We are the only sandwich shop that makes their bread. We make our fresh bread for our sandwiches every single morning," Grundman said.

Their signature bread is a fluffy, milk-dough hoagie bun. They also make cinnamon rolls every day filling the building with delicious smells.

Everything for the sandwiches, soups and salads is made in house, except the cold cuts. They smoke their own salmon and bacon and make their own gourmet dressings and spreads.

Grundman has been a professional chef for 13 years and she has invested significantly in equipment to expand the bakery in the near future.

"Opening up a little sandwich shop has been my dream since my husband and I moved up to Collingwood," she said. "We've doubled down and created a large pastry and bread program," she added

The most popular sandwich is The Donna, with cold cuts, marinated tomatoes and tonnes of flavour.

"I've only seen two people finish it in one sitting," she said.

While the restaurant sits 12 people, they also offer online ordering, so people who order ahead don't have to wait in line.

"We do a very large lunch rush," said Grundman.

Online ordering also makes the restaurant searchable for tourists staying in local accommodations.

"I want to consistently offer as many opportunities for guests and locals to be able to find us," Grundman said.

Misfits Bodega is also a food provider for the Somewhere Inn and the Collingwood Ski Club.

They will soon be partnering with Uber Eats for delivery.

Cost for food ranges from $9 for the "everything in" cream cheese and tomato to $21 for The Clerb – house-made hoagie, roasted chicken, bacon, shreddy lettuce, tomato, cheddar and house-made mayo. The chicken Caesar salad, priced at $18, comes with in-house roasted chicken, house-cured bacon, romaine, parmesan and house-made parmesan croutons with Misfits Caesar dressing. Cinnamon rolls are $5.

So far the reception has been "awesome."

"Everyone has been so welcoming and we are getting to know our neighbours," said Grundman.

Winter hours are Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
