A new novel that combines fact with fiction has been published by local author Melanie Franner.

The book, entitled Moments in Time, details the journey of grief and loss undertaken by the author upon the death of her husband.

According to Franner, the book began as a cathartic release, eventually evolving into the novel.

“As a freelance writer, I felt the need to write about my story,” says Franner. “I had no intention of writing a novel. I just began the writing process and it grew from there.”

Melanie Franner has had a long career as a freelance writer, working for various business publications over the years. Moments in Time is her first novel. She was born in Newmarket, grew up in Bradford and lived in Cookstown for several years.

Franner now resides in Barrie.

Moments in Time offers a glimpse into the author’s life through a series of engaging “moments.” It is an honest and compelling story, one that uses both humour and honesty to recount the long road of despair and despondency through to recovery.

Although Moments in Time is a standalone fictional novel, it also is relevant to the healthcare community. It has received strong support from grief counsellors and others in similar organizations.

“I hope that this book can help someone else who finds himself or herself in a similar situation,” says Franner. “If it can aid just one person, then I will feel gratified in having told my story – as painful as it was.”

Franner will be signing copies of her book on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at the Barrie Chapter’s store (76 Barrie View Drive, Barrie, ON, L4N 8V4) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

“My body is going through the motions. I force myself to eat when I am not hungry. I crave glass after glass of wine. And then I sleep like I have never slept before.

“And each night brings a different adventure with my husband. We re-live past episodes or we encounter new ones. But it is always the two of us. And we’re so damn happy that it breaks my heart anew each time I awake and realize it will never be again.”

Moments in Time was published on Oct. 31, 2018. It is available online at both chapters.indigo.ca and amazon.ca.
