BE THE CHANGE FILM SERIES

The Be the Change Film Series (BTC) is a Collingwood institution.

It’s designed to unite the Collingwood and surrounding communities around a variety of environment-centric issues. Provocative, carefully chosen films are selected around themes such as growing food sustainably, resource extraction and climate change.

The 16th season promises to be a great one, beginning on March 6, 2024 with the multi-award-winning documentary, The Magnitude of All Things. Filmmaker Jennifer Abbott, who grew up on Georgian Bay, merges stories from the front lines of climate change with recollections of the loss of her sister, drawing intimate parallels between personal and planetary grief.

Find out more at btc.watershedtrust.ca, where you can purchase tickets in advance (screenings tend to sell out) for $15/$8/$0 for general, student and under-12 admission.

BTC Film Series Season 16 will again be presenting films at the Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood on the third Wednesday of every month. Mark your calendar — the dates for BTC Season 16 are March 6 and 20, April 17, May 15 and June 19.

“The environmental issues we face as a species are worth exploring,” says Donna Howey, BTC committee chair. “There are solutions to our problems and these films point the way to putting our relationship with the Earth on a better path. The movies we chose are also some of the best around, beautifully done and fascinating.”

The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust, our local area’s 39-year-old environmental charity, runs the film series as a friend- and fundraising effort. Proceeds help fight bad development plans, especially around the Silver Creek Wetland, watercourses, woodlands and wildlife corridors. They also go to the organization’s environmental education efforts, keeping tabs on golf course pesticide use, working with the ski hills to limit negative impacts on fish/wildlife habitat from runoff, and much more.

Showings will take place at 7 p.m. at the Simcoe Street Theatre on the third Wednesday of every month. Find tickets online at bethechangefilmseries.com.

A walking-friendly location

Howey points out that the Simcoe Street Theatre is right in the middle of Collingwood, across from the Collingwood library and a block from the Train Trail, which connects to the area’s extensive biking/walking trail network.

“Why not hop on a bike or enjoy a walk? Make it an adventure as well as a night out,” she suggests.

Seeking sponsors

BTC seeks sponsorship from organizations that espouse socially and environmentally progressive values, such as the series’ title sponsor, Chestnut Park Real Estate/Georgian Bay Group.

“It’s such great exposure — such a good marketing decision for local businesses,” observes Howey.

Sponsorship starts at $100. Interested businesses are encouraged to get in touch.

While many BTC sponsors have signed on for Season 16, a few long-standing sponsors have left the flock. BTC’s other Season 16 sponsors include Anytime Fitness, Rockside Campbell Design, Canopy Media, Conscious Water, Escarpment Corridor Alliance, Free Spirit Tours, Collingwood Climate Action Team, The Makers Outpost, ¡Outwrite! Communications, and TM Designs.
