Bicycle parking added to two municipal lots

The shelters were paid for with money from the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling program

If you’re visiting or working downtown this spring, summer, and fall, you’ll have a new place to park your bicycle.

Two new bike shelters have been added to the town’s largest parking lots – Pine Street and behind the Eddie Bush Arena (off Ste. Marie Street).

The open-walled shelters cover a concrete pad with rails for bikes to be locked to. Town staff confirmed the concrete and structure combined totalled about $35,000 for each of the two new shelters.

Money granted to Collingwood from the Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program covered the cost of both shelters.

The town’s cycling plan from 2019 put strong emphasis on what it referred to as “end-of-trip amenities,” including parking facilities among the priorities.

“Safe, secure and accessible bicycle parking is the most essential end-of-trip amenity,” states the cycling plan. “Potential riders can be deterred from cycling simply because there is nowhere to leave their bicycle upon arrival at their destination.”

The shelters are still closed off with town barricades while the concrete sets, but should be ready to use soon.
