A man died in a home in Clarksburg during a stand-off with Police early this morning.
A 57-year-old man died sometime last night or early this morning while police surrounded a residence in Clarksburg. According to Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP, officers were dispatched to the residence to check on the wellbeing of a male.
“As a result of a police investigation, the male was located deceased in the residence,” states the press release issued earlier today.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) later reported OPP officers were called to a home on Clark Street near 10th Line in Clarksburg for a domestic call at 10 p.m. last night, Jan. 29. The officers "secured the safety of an individual and then set up a perimeter around the residence in which a man of interest was determined to be."
The SIU stated there were multiple attempts made to contact the man, and at 4:30 a.m. this morning (Jan. 30) officers entered the home and found the man deceased.
Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP would not provide further details since the investigation is now in the hands of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
Const. Martin Hachey, media officer for the Collingwood and Blue Mountains OPP, said the police call the SIU in a case where someone is seriously injured or dies as a result of direct or indirect police involvement.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency independent of the police and at an arm’s length to the Attorney General. According to the SIU website, the organization investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this investigation, according to a news release issued by the SIU.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must:
• consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
• depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
• report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General
