Planning a staycation? Add A Place to Grow to your must-see list of local attractions from now until July 9 at the Collingwood Museum!
A Place to Grow is an informative and visually stunning travelling exhibit from the Royal Botanical Gardens developed with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The new exhibit highlights the history of gardening in a Canadian context, from the agricultural crops that shaped Ontario's economic development to the ornamental plants that influenced our social history. The exhibit is illustrated with spectacular images from their impressive historic catalogue collection.
A companion display, entitled Going to Seed, has been developed by Collingwood Museum staff to explore the Smart’s Bros. influence on Collingwood’s early agriculture, the growth of green lawns and ornamental gardens within town, and the continuing popularity of the Great Northern Exhibition. Featured artifacts of local interest include a Smart’s picking basket, uniform, and jars as well as GNE memorabilia and more.
Visitors will also notice three new community garden boxes on the museum grounds. The gardens will be incorporated into the Museum’s successful children’s summer programs and onsite activities leading up to the summer months. Produce from two of the garden boxes will be donated to the Collingwood Youth Centre’s community fridge. The third box will host a pollinator garden with the support of Pollinate Collingwood.
