Coun. Brandon Houston has resigned.
According to a late addition to Monday’s council meeting agenda posted at 4 p.m. on Friday, Houston provided written notice to the town of his resignation from his council seat on Jan. 23, effective immediately.
This follows the councillor going on a leave of absence, which was first announced publicly on Nov. 18, 2024.
“The town has received notice from Coun. Houston that he’ll be taking a temporary leave of absence from council due to personal reasons effective immediately,” said Mayor Yvonne Hamlin at that time.
No reason has yet been provided publicly for the councillor’s resignation.
Houston was elected for his first term to Collingwood council on October 2022, earning 4,822 votes, putting him in third for one of seven councillor seats.
During his time on council, he also served as the council representative on the Collingwood Downtown BIA board.
At the Jan. 27 council meeting, councillors will be considering whether to declare his seat vacant, and to direct staff to prepare a report on the process and options available to fill the vacancy.
Houston did not immediately return a request for comment for this story.
Council’s regular meeting will take place on Monday, Jan. 27 starting at 2 p.m. Any members of the public may attend in-person in council chambers at Collingwood town hall, or virtually by Zoom webinar. The meeting will also be livestreamed on the town’s YouTube channel here.
