Christmas spirit rings true as students perform for nursing home residents

A music class from Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School played Christmas carols on bells outside Collingwood Nursing Home this week

Several angels got their wings this week as bells rang in the parking lot of Collingwood Nursing Home.

Students from Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School performed Christmas carols with their handbells in the parking lot of the long-term care to lift the spirits of the residents inside.

Teacher Jessica Hierons told CollingwoodToday in an email the students are part of a second quadmester music class and had only been together for a total of nine days before performing on Monday (Dec. 14) at the nursing home.

In class they've been playing keyboard, guitar, bass, and percussion instruments. The students all have prior music experience.

"We were trying to find a creative way to perform live and give back to the community all in time for Christmas," said Hierons. "Handbells were the answer as we were able to walk them down the street to Collingwood Nursing Home. The tone of the bells is perfect for Christmas music as well!"

Sixteen students and three staff walked to the nursing home where they performed four carols: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, The First Noel, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and Deck the Halls. One student played two pieces on keyboard.

The residents stayed inside with windows open so they could see and hear the performance from a safe distance.

"It was nice to be able to play live for an appreciative audience and to send them our well wishes in person through the glass," said Hierons.
