A committee of five women has formed and has planned a march in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.
"We were all outraged at what happened, and what's been happening, and we said we've got to do something," said Jane Walker, one of the organizers of the march.
The walk begins on Sunday, June 14 with everybody meeting in the parking lot behind town hall/ Eddie Bush Memorial Arena by 6:30 p.m.. The group will walk north on Hurontario, then turn west along First Street and north again on Cedar Street until it reaches Awen Gathering Circle.
Walker said all who are able will take a knee at Awen and listen to speeches by Black and Indigenous individuals.
The speeches will begin at 7:15 at the gathering circle.
"There's a lot of racism in this town. To think we don't have any is crazy," said Walker. "This is a start to get people involved."
She said the committee has already contacted local OPP and volunteers will be reminding people in the crowd to wear a mask and maintain a two-metre distance from anyone not in their household.
There are no pets allowed for the walk.
This will be the second Black Lives Matter demonstration in Collingwood this week. On Monday, about 2,000 people gathered outside of town hall for a protest. The event also saw people walking through town with signs bearing anti-racism messages and also with chants such as "Black Lives Matter" and "No Justice, No Peace."
