A local girls soccer team made Collingwood and Canada proud recently when they took the gold medal in an international tournament.
The Collingwood Canadians U16 girls soccer team competed against teams from Poland, Colombia, Italy, U.S., and Slovakia while participating in the tournament, which was held in Agropoli, Italy.
The Collingwood team became the first Canadian team to bring home the gold in the tournament.
“The team spent over a year fundraising and planning for this amazing athletic and cultural experience,” said Coach Mike Gallo in a statement to CollingwoodToday, adding that the girls also spent some of their time in Italy taking in art, architecture, and culture of ancient Rome, Paestum and the Amalfi Coast.
“It was an experience of a lifetime for this Collingwood team and they represented Canada with great pride,” he said.
The tournament took place from April 15 to 20.
