A fire sent clouds of white smoke into the air from a home on Second Street this evening, making it the third house fire of the day for the Collingwood Fire Department.
Fire Chief Dan Thurman confirmed the local department was called out to the latest fire at 5:43 p.m. this evening after someone walking their dog by the house noticed smoke coming from it and called 911.
The fire was caused by a torch accidentally left on following some plumbing work. The house was unoccupied at the time, and contained multiple apartment units. Thurman said the fire was contained to the basement. The damage in the home was mostly caused by smoke, but some restoration will be required, including repairs to the electrical panel.
Around 6 a.m. this morning (April 29), firefighters were called to a unit on Ontario Street across from the Legion for a garage fire that started in a powerbar. After returning to the station, crews headed out again to a home on Oak Street at around 9 a.m. where a fire had consumed an upstairs unit in a home with three apartments in it. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
No one was injured in any of the fires, and any occupants home at the time had evacuated before fire crews arrived.
This might be a good day to check your smoke alarms.
