Two structure fires pulled all of Collingwood's firefighters onto trucks this morning (April 29).
Starting at 6 a.m., the Collingwood Fire Department was called to a garage fire in a multi-unit residential building on Ontario Street across from the Legion.
Chief Dan Thurman said the fire was started by a power bar in the garage, and smoke alarms sounded an early warning. The fire was contained to the garage and didn't spread to the attached home or other units.
Shortly before 9 a.m. the alarm sounded again for a house fire on Oak Street between First and Second Streets. It was a full staff recall, which brought full-time and volunteer firefighters out to the blaze.
Thurman said the home was split into three units: an upper, main, and basement apartment. The fire was in the upstairs apartment. Three people were in the apartment, but got out safely and were cleared by EMS. The basement apartment is rented, but the tenant wasn't home at the time. The main floor apartment was unoccupied.
The upper apartment was consumed by the fire, with crews still working on putting it out at 10 a.m. this morning.
Thurman said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Oak Street is blocked between First and Second Streets, and the fire chief is asking people to avoid the area.
