Collingwood hoists Pride flag at library

The crowd was small to keep in line with public health restrictions, but the flag is being raised to mark Pride month

Members of Collingwood council along with The Rainbow Club of South Georgian Bay held a small, and distanced, gathering to raise the Pride flag at the Collingwood Public Library.

Though the flag pole wasn't cooperating and wouldn't actually allow the raising part of a flag-raising ceremony, the flag will eventually be flying at the library.

Andrew Siegwart and John Miller of The Rainbow Club of South Georgian Bay with Mayor Brian Saunderson spoke to the small crowd gathered at the flagpole.

Miller is separated from his boyfriend who is in New York City and on lockdown due to COVID-19.

"This is a special day for me because it represents him being here," said Miller.

He said he was disappointed Collingwood's first-ever Pride festival was cancelled.

"We had so much momentum and it really was going to be such a great event," he said, promising there would be a Pride festival in Collingwood one day.

Siegwart, who was also celebrating his birthday today, said he was proud to be there.

"The Pride movement is about equality and diversity for all at the end of the day," said Siegwart.

Though in the past the Pride flag has been raised in August in Collingwood, it's been raised today to mark Pride month.
