Collingwood General and Marine Hospital (CGMH) is excited to announce the commencement of construction on its new, state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) suite. Situated in the hospital’s lower level, this renovation will transform nearly 2,000 square feet of former office space into a cutting-edge imaging suite, enhancing the hospital's ability to provide advanced diagnostic services to the community.

After more than a year of careful planning, this marks a significant milestone for both our hospital and the community, as we take a major step toward bringing advanced diagnostic imaging to CGMH. This project has involved incredible dedication from teams across multiple departments. From planning and engineering to the submission phases, our team has worked tirelessly to ensure everything is ready for construction.

“Today marks an incredible milestone for our community as we break ground on a new MRI service. This project is a testament to our commitment to advancing healthcare and ensuring that our community has access to the cutting-edge diagnostic tools they deserve, right here at home,” says Michael Lacroix, CGMH President and CEO.

CGMH, alongside the CGMH Hospital Foundation would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the South Georgian Bay community for their tremendous support, raising $5 million to make this project a reality.

“With MRI wait times at an all-time high, and nearly 11,000 local residents currently traveling outside the region for MRI scans, having this facility on-site will allow us to provide more timely access to care, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the overall patient experience, right here at CGMH,” says Dr. Murray Miller, CGMH Chief of Radiology.

Construction is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2025, with the MRI unit anticipated to be operational by fall 2025. In early 2025, CGMH will also ramp up its recruitment for qualified MRI Technologists, whose expertise will be essential to the success of this new service.

In December 2022, the provincial government announced that CGMH was one of 27 Ontario hospitals to receive funding aimed at expanding access to MRI services across the province.

What is an MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to produce detailed images of the body. MRI is particularly effective at capturing high-contrast images of soft tissues, such as the brain, spinal cord, joints, and internal organs, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions.
