Over 2,000 students and teachers from Collingwood and Nottawa Elementary Schools will be celebrating healthy nutrition as part of the Great Big Crunch on Thursday, March 28, biting into a delicious local apple, creating a synchronized crunch.

With support from Kennedy Orchards who donated the apples, local schools will join students from across Canada.

The Great Big Crunch, started by FoodShare Toronto, promotes healthy snacking and celebrates locally grown veggies or fruit. Since 2008 over 1 million people have joined the Great Big Crunch.

This year the event falls at the end of Nutrition Month, encouraging Canadians to Unlock the Potential of Food to improve health, enhance lives, fuel activities, build healthy eating habits in children and bring people together.

“The Great Big Crunch provides a fun way for our community to join together around the importance of healthy eating”, said Jennifer Parker from the Town of Collingwood who is helping facilitate the event.

Canada’s new food guide highlights the importance of eating a variety of foods each day, including plenty of vegetables and fruits.

“Crunching into a local apple is a great way to enjoy healthy food with others and have fun," said Jennifer Parker.

Add a crunch to your day and reach for fresh fruits or vegetables as a healthy snack. While supplies last, apples will also be available at the Centennial Aquatic Centre, Collingwood Public Library and Town Hall.
