A tradition since 1855, the Great Northern Exhibition (GNE) opened this evening, kicking off three days of family activities, agricultural and culinary competition, and entertainment.
In addition to the traditional fruit and vegetable, culinary, craft and collection exhibits entered by community members, the fair offers three full days of live entertainment, pony rides, a petting zoo, 4-H shows, and horse shows.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, take in a children's pedal tractor pull, a horse pull, a stilt-walker, a strongman, a fire juggler, sheep shearing demonstrations, a miniature horse show and an antique tractor parade.
On the outdoor stage both Saturday and Sunday will be Dan the Music Man, the musical duet of Lisa McEwan and Rick Fairburn, and Drew Ripley Creatures of Whimsy.
Saturday's 4-H events will be beef and cattle shows, and Sunday's will be sheep.
The demolition derby is on Sunday at 1 p.m. and both days feature horse shows, Western on Saturday and English on Sunday.
The GNE takes place on Fairgrounds Road in Clearview, and is hosted by the Collingwood Agricultural Society. Admission is $12 for adults and youth aged 13 and up, $4 for youth between 6 and 12 years old, and free for children under 5.
