This weekend a group of Collingwood friends who have come together for a philanthropic mission delivered holiday packages to families in Wasaga Beach living in low-income situations.
The initiative, called Be Kind, is led by Monica Calzaretto, Monica Piccinno, Sarah Abawi, and Becky Craig.
They delivered 40 Christmas packages including at least $100 in gift cards, blankets, mittens, and staple food items to families in Wasaga Beach this weekend.
Their efforts and the contents of the boxes were supported by individuals and businesses that donated money and supplies toward the effort. They surpassed their goal of 20 boxes and raised $3,430 in donations.
Abawi told CollingwoodToday she was aware of a community of people in Wasaga Beach in low-income situations, some living in temporary residences not meant for winter habitation. She reached out to ask if they could use some help this holiday season.
“We found it was needed and formed a group and reached out to friends and family,” said Abawi. “The goal was 20 families to start.”
Thanks to donations, they were able to support 40 families.
“There are other organizations who are doing amazing things, but there are not a lot of organizations that allow you to collaborate with your children,” said Abawi. “I think it’s really important that we teach our kids about kindness and giving back and helping .. whether it’s people, pets, the environment … It’s really important to touch on all those things.”
The group planned to hand out the Christmas packages this weekend.
“We will always take donations,” said Craig. “We can go again and we’ll find families. But we’ve certainly met our goals for this year.”
The friends are also brainstorming more initiatives for the Be Kind group next year.
