Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has posted a no swimming advisory at Collingwood's Sunset Point beach on the west end (60 Saint Lawrence Street).

The health unit posted the notice after routine testing today (July 22). The same tests were done at Sunset Point's east end, and that beach remains open with no advisories.

The health unit tests the water for levels of E. coli bacteria. When elevated levels are discovered, the health unit posts a warning to indicate the water is unsafe for swimming.

Bacteria levels can increase due to heavy rainfall, cloudy water, a large number of swimmers, a large number of birds, shallow water, wet sand, wind and high waves.

Sunset Point reached capacity before lunch on Saturday according to the town's social media. There have also been a few heavy rainfalls this week.

When an advisory is posted, the health unit is warning people that swimming may increase your risk of developing skin, eye, ear, nose, or throat infections and/or stomach illness.

If you still choose to swim, the health unit warns you should not dunk your head or swallow any water.

Visit the health unit website for more information about beach advisories.
