On Monday, residents of Collingwood can leave spent batteries on their curb for pickup by the county’s waste collectors.
The County of Simcoe is offering curbside battery collection next week. Many residents will have received a marked battery bag in the mail, and if not, batteries can be put in a zipper seal plastic bag and left on the curb beside your recycling bin.
The county will be collecting standard A, AA, AAA, C, D, and 9-volt batteries as well as button batteries next week.
Only undamaged, single-use, and dry cell batteries will be picked up.
Batteries that won’t be accepted for battery collection week include: rechargeable battery packs such as those found in electronics, car batteries, and industrial batteries. Those batteries can all be taken to County hazardous waste facilities for free. The nearest facility to Collingwood is in Stayner (30/31 Sideroad).
According to the County of Simcoe website, all batteries collected are sorted in a facility and recycled to recover metal, carbon, manganese and other components.
Curbside battery collection is not available for apartment buildings, but apartment residents can bring batteries to the hazardous waste facility.
