NEWS RELEASE
GEORGIAN TRIANGLE LIFE LONG LEARNING INSTITUTE
************************
The next lecture series from the Georgian Triangle Life Long Learning Institute starts Friday, March 25, with a series on the history of music.
Barbara Steed Young, a renowned director, educator, composer and performer from Stratford has an extensive knowledge of the history of music to share with you.
Her upcoming lecture series on human migration and music will demonstrate how some of the best music is a product of multiple cultural influences.
For example, the polyrhythmic music of slaves from Africa blended with European hymns to evolve into new forms of music. These include blues, jazz, spirituals, R&B and rock and roll.
She offers insights into how Europeans fleeing fascism during the 1930s and 1940s contributed to the culture of New York and the young movie industry in Los Angeles.
More specifically, Eric Wolfgang Korngold from Austria created the template for movie scores.
Her explorations include Celtic music combined with Moorish to introduce new instruments, the impact of British overseas settlers in Canada and the recreation of Greek drama through the invention of opera in early 17th century Venice.
Barbara has worked with the Stratford Festival for 20 years in addition to being the Music Director Emeritus of the Stratford Symphony Orchestra. John MacMurchy, a local jazz saxophonist with four albums of critical acclaim will perform accompanied by a pianist in the concluding lecture on May 6.
