Local kids step back in time at museum camp (3 photos)

Collingwood Museum is running decade-themed camps all week; The Roaring '20s was Tuesday's theme

Local kids jumped in a time machine and were transported to the Roaring ’20s on Tuesday.

While the Collingwood Museum is running differently themed day camps all summer long, this week’s theme is Time Warp.

Every day this week, kids in attendance will learn about a different decade’s historical context, learn about what was happening in the world in that time, learn dated slang and complete art projects in line with that day’s theme.

On Tuesday, kids were fascinated by the different language used in the 1920s.

“We learned ‘the cat’s meow’ means something is cool,” said Romy Gold, 8.

Colin Tangney, 7, liked learning about another phrase for “tough.”

“Hard-boiled,” he said with a smile.

Kids also learned about the advent of the “Talkies,” movies that included dialogue. When they first came out, the first one in Collingwood played at The Gayety Theatre.

The participants also created self-portraits in the abstract Picasso style.

On Wednesday, kids will be learning about Groovy 60s, with the Tubular 80s to follow on Thursday.

Museum day camps are $12 per program ($10 for Museum Members). Programs run twice daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. If you’d like to enrol your child in one of the day camps, phone 705-444-2500 ext. 3382 or email [email protected].
