The PROBUS Club of Collingwood marked its 35th anniversary today with a plaque and member celebration in the morning on Oct. 6.
Formed as a men's club in 1987, the local club was the fourth PROBUS club established in Canada.
A PROBUS Club is a non-profit organization for retired men and women who want to remain active in a social network with others who have similar interest. The clubs do not fundraise, and instead focus on social networking and regular speakers from within and out of the club's membership.
The PROBUS Club of Collingwood remains a men's club, and its members participate in social events through the year including golf, biking, hiking, theatre, and tours throughout Georgian Triangle. The club meets the first Thursday of each month at the Collingwood Legion.
There are 10 PROBUS clubs in Collingwood and five more in Wasaga Beach. There are 250 clubs in Canada with 38,000 members, and over 4,000 clubs worldwide.
October is PROBUS month, and to mark the occasion, the town will be flying the PROBUS flag for a week at the Collingwood Public Library community flagpole starting Oct. 11. The town hall clock tower will be lit up purple for the week also for PROBUS.
The flag-raising takes place Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
