Navratri celebration 'ignites the spirit' at Georgian College

The colourful annual Hindu festival spans nine nights and is celebrated with dance, food and devotion

The Barrie Indian Association hosted its ninth annual Navratri Dhamaal in association with Georgian College on Sunday night, with hundreds of revellers dancing the night away.

Navaratri is an annual Hindu festival observed in honour of the goddess Durga.

It spans nine nights, beginning on Oct. 15 this year.

The website for the event boasted a “night of cultural splendour, dance and devotion as we come together to celebrate Navratri, the festival that ignites the spirit of unity and joy among people of all ages.

"Whether you're a seasoned Garba enthusiast or new to this exhilarating dance form, our event promises something for everyone.”

Garba is a folk dance and the songs typically revolve around the subjects of the nine goddesses of the Navratri celebration.

The traditional clothing of the Garba dancer is red, pink, yellow, orange, and with women wearing heavy jewelry.

“As giving back to the community, we are supporting Georgian's Food Bank (Georgian Food Locker),” says the association.

Attendees were welcomed to bring a non-perishable food item to the event.
