A new online tool will allow people to see available internet options and connectivity speeds for neighbourhoods across Simcoe County.
During Tuesday’s (April 26) committee of the whole meeting, County of Simcoe councillors received an update on the new Simcoe County Broadband Mapping Resource, an online database searchable by address that outlines what internet providers are currently available, current download and upload speeds and what internet upgrades are confirmed to be coming to any address in Simcoe County.
“This is the most accurate source for this information,” said Henry de Jager, Information Technology (IT) director with the county. “As municipalities are being made aware of privately funded initiatives, that can be relayed to our GIS department and will be uploaded and reflected on the map.”
Simcoe County IT staff have developed the publicly available online interactive map for viewing current and future broadband availability. The interactive map is a compilation of data from the Federal Government Innovation, Science and Economic Development open data source.
According to the staff report on the matter, this is the most up-to-date and accurate data source for current and future broadband availability in Canada which is also utilized by the Universal Broadband Fund.
The report was received for information by councillors at Tuesday’s meeting.
The interactive map is available here.
