Our Lady of the Bay Catholic High School (OLB) participated in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association swimming championships on Dec 15 in Barrie, competing against 22 teams.
OLB's swim team finished second overall in the standings. All swimmers contributed to the points which enabled our small team to be victorious.
Presently, six swimmers are going on to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) championships in February but at least six others are waiting to see where they rank in the province before they know if they qualified for the provincial meet. Based on a rule change, they may have to wait until February to find out if they get a spot.
Siblings Riley, Reese and Jack Wessinger all made it to OFSAA with first-place finishes in 100 individual medley, for Reese, in medley relay for Jack, and in 50 free and 100 individual medley for Riley.
Hugo Duras, Andrew Denbok and Marshall Kerr joined Jack Wessinger in placing first in their relay and will all attend OFSAA.
Marshall Kerr placed third in his 50 free and 100 individual medley, Anderson Hulshof had a second-place finish in 100 fly and fourth in 50 free. Spencer Adlington narrowly missed first place in his 100 breast, Hugo Duras placed sixth in his 50 back, Sophia Ego was seventh in 50 back, Ava Gorman was 10th in 100 breast, Isaac Morris was seventh in 50 breast, Andrew Denbok was seventh in 100 free.
Junior girls relay members Sophia Ego, Sunny Valdez, Amelia Ellis, and Mia Braden had a strong second-place finish in their 200 individual medley relay and fifth in their 200 free relay. Mia Braden was fifth in 100 individual medley, Sophia Ego was sixth and Sunny Valdez was seventh. Ava Gorman, Eden Harbec, Reese Wessinger and Francesca Laframboise finished third in an open 400m relay and Spencer Adlington, Anderson Hulshof, Riley Wessinger and Ethan Does had a third-place finish in their 400 m open relay.
The junior girls' team finished fourth overall at the Georgian Bay championships, the junior boys' team finished second overall. The open girls, of which we have only two, finished fourth overall and the open boys, of which we only have two, finished third overall.
