Public Health Ontario is reporting 1,859 new cases of COVID-19 today, which is a new daily record in the province, surpassing the previous mark of 1,855 set Nov. 27.
The daily case count this week has been in the 1,700 to 1,800 range each day.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says the highest number of cases today are coming out of Toronto with 504, followed by Peel Region with 463, and York Region with 198.
Twenty more people have died from the virus in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 3,757. Approximately two-thirds of all deaths have been people living in long-term care facilities.
According to the province, 1,624 people have also recovered from the virus since yesterday's report.
There are 15,212 active cases in Ontario at the moment.
Overall, there have now been 125,385 COVID cases in the province since the pandemic began earlier this year, with 106,416 of those people having recovered from the disease.
The province has also completed more than 6.5 million tests in that time, including 59,399 in the past 24 hours. More than 63,000 tests are still under investigation, however.
There are currently 709 people hospitalized with the virus, with 202 of those patients in intensive care, and 116 on ventilators.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit was reporting a total of 2,218 COVID cases in the region since the pandemic began, with 2,119 of those in Simcoe County. There are 1,900 cases listed as recovered in the region. Thirteen people were hospitalized, all of whom are Simcoe County residents. The health unit has confirmed 52 deaths since March.
In addition, two people at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) in Midland — one patient and one staff member — tested positive for the virus on Friday. However, those numbers are not reflected in the latest health unit figures. The hometowns of the two people is unknown as the health unit does not update its numbers on weekends. An outbreak has since been declared in GBGH's 2 North inpatient unit.
The incidence rate for Simcoe County is 401 cases per 100,000 people.
