This past Sunday evening, December 29th, Blue Mountain Village was alight with celebration as Chabad Collingwood hosted its annual Menorah Lighting. Despite the rain, a large and spirited crowd gathered to mark this cherished tradition, demonstrating the resilience and unity that Chanukah embodies.

The evening began with an inspiring message from Rabbi Berel Shur of Chabad Collingwood. Rabbi Shur reflected on the story of Chanukah, noting that just as the Jewish people in ancient times gathered to kindle the Menorah with the hope of a miracle, today we gather around the Menorah with the hope of living in peace and harmony.

The event featured warm greetings from a representative of MP Terry Dowdall’s office, who conveyed heartfelt Chanukah wishes and expressed strong support for the Jewish community.

MPP Brian Saunderson followed with his own message of unity, offering his best wishes for a happy Chanukah. The Blue Mountains Mayor Andrea Matrosovs also addressed the crowd, sharing her heartfelt greetings.

Mr. Israel Ellis, author of The Wake-Up Call, was honoured with lighting the Menorah. In a moving address, Mr. Ellis spoke about the need to combat antisemitism by finding common ground with one another. He offered a message of hope, envisioning a brighter future where the Jewish community in Canada can live in peace and security.

The lighting was followed by joyous Chanukah music, spirited dancing, and the traditional holiday foods—latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts)—which added to the festive atmosphere.

This special evening was made possible thanks to the support of Blue Mountain Village, generous sponsors, and the many community members who joined us despite the rainy weather.
