Speed bumps installed on Heritage Drive

The town has also fixed up the trail heading to Millennium Park

The Town of Collingwood has installed temporary speed bumps on Heritage Drive, one of a few actions undertaken to "improve safety" for motorists and pedestrians.

Last week town staff presented a list of changes that could be implemented at Millennium Park and Sunset Point Park to improve crowd and traffic control at both parks.

The list included more bylaw enforcement staff presence at both parks and improvements to Heritage Drive to better control traffic. In addition to the speed bumps, the town has painted a centre line on Heritage Drive, and done some work on the parallel pedestrian trail.

The trail had been washed out by waves during storms this spring. Parks staff have partially restored the trail, and will continue to work on it, according to a notice posted to the town's website.

"Council, residents, and visitors alike have expressed a desire for providing a safe and enjoyable experience for using Heritage Drive to access Millennium Park, the town's boat launch facilities, and water features," states the notice on the town's website.

At Sunset Point this weekend, staff kept one parking lot reserved for residents and used pylons and barricades to prevent parking on residential streets. The public washrooms at the park are also open longer (to 9 p.m. instead of 6 p.m.) seven days a week now.

The town has set up portable toilets at the harbour, Millennium Park, the Collingwood Museum, Harbourview Park, Princeton Shores, Watts Skiff, and at the east end of Sunset Point Park.

A notice posted before the weekend stated there would be increased enforcement at Sunset Point, and noted bylaw officers would be issuing fines of up to $750 per individual for any gatherings exceeding 10 people. This Friday, gathering limits will increase to 100 people for outdoor gatherings as per Premier Doug Ford's announcement initiating Stage 3 reopening for most of the health units in the province.
