Springwater Township Mayor Don Allen is facing charges of impaired driving and dangerous driving, according to a news report.
Simcoe.com reported earlier this evening that Huronia West OPP confirmed that Allen has been charged.
According to a news release from Huronia West OPP issued earlier this evening, 67-year-old Donald Allen, of Springwater Township, has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle while impaired as well as dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
OPP Const. Martin Hachey would not confirm to BarrieToday that the person charged is the township's mayor saying, “we don’t usually confirm the job of the person charged.”
Allen could not be reached by BarrieToday this evening.
The Huronia West OPP began an investigation into a traffic complaint involving a possible impaired driver on June 26, shortly before 10 p.m. when officers were called to attend a business parking lot on Wilson Drive in Springwater Township, just outside Barrie.
The call was in regards to a possible impaired driver who was seen leaving the area. Officers conducted patrols of the area, however, they could not locate the vehicle.
"The investigation into this occurrence has now led police to charge the driver of the vehicle," the release states.
Allen is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood on Sept. 3.
