A firefighter with 28 years experience as part of the local department has been named the new deputy fire chief.

Stephen Emo was announced as the new second-in-command for the Collingwood Fire Department during a council meeting July 18.

Former Fire Chief Ross Parr retired in June, and former Deputy Chief Dan Thurman was promoted to chief.

Thurman explained during the council meeting that Deputy Chief Emo has been on the Collingwood Fire Department for 28 years, starting as a volunteer firefighter, and working his way up to full-time and then captain.

"He has exceptional leadership skills ... he's a great friend and he's done an exceptional job," said Thurman.

Emo told council he was thrilled at the promotion.

"I'm looking forward to continuing my service to the community and the fire department and working with you all more," said Emo.

Acting Mayor Keith Hull congratulated Emo and Thurman on their new titles.

"I know the department is in excellent hands, I know you'll continue to do the fine work," said Hull.
