Town marks Day of Pink with flag raising

International Day of Pink is an anti-bullying campaign focused specifically on the LGBTQ+ community

For International Day of Pink yesterday, a local anti-bullying advocate and the town's mayor hoisted a simple white flag with a pink handprint on it in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

Trevor Henson and Mayor Brian Saunderson raised the flag at the Collingwood Public Library on Wednesday afternoon.

Henson is one of the founders of Collingwood's anti-bullying club and has been present for, and often leading Anti-bullying Day and International Day of Pink flag raisings for more than a decade in Collingwood.

International Day of Pink, held annually on the second Wednesday of April, was established in 2007 after a student was bullied for wearing pink. Two of his classmates intervened and encouraged others in the school and community to wear pink.

Pink Shirt Day is held in February as a day to address all forms of bullying, and International Day of Pink in April is meant to focus its support for the LGBTQ+ community.
