Building permit revenue for Collingwood has jumped a whopping $30 million over the same period last year due, in part, to a local subdivision.
In a memo included in the Development and Operations Committee agenda for May 23, Chief Building Inspector Greg Miller explains there were 95 building permits issued in April 2019 with a corresponding value of $31.7 million.
In April 2018, the building services department issued 39 permits for a value of $1.7 million.
Year-to-date numbers show an increase in building permit values of $60 million. In 2019 so far, the town issued 285 permits with a corresponding value of $70 million, versus 157 permits issued in 2018 between January and April, 2018, with a corresponding value of $9 million.
Those numbers represent the value of the construction. Building permit fees collected so far this year totalled $149,031, which is up over 2018’s year-to-date total of $84,958.
The jump in fees and construction value is, in part, related to 83 permits issued for Eden Oak Homes for the Indigo Estates subdivision.
With the increased building permits also come an increased demand for inspections. According to Miller’s memo, inspections are up by 74 per cent last month (1,374 inspections) over April last year (791 inspections).
In the last 12 months, the building services department has completed 4,262 inspections.
Since May 2018, there have been 294 new dwelling starts valued at $80.3 million in the town of Collingwood.
