Grace Johnson, a Grade 7 Admiral Collingwood Elementary School student, was the winner of the town's Mayor for a Month program for June, 2024.

Collingwood town hall is accepting applications from local teens who would like to spend a month as youth mayor.

Beginning in the spring of this year, the youth mayor program is an opportunity for students in grades seven to 12 to shadow local government officials and staff to learn more about municipal administration.

The youth mayor will attend a council meeting, tour town facilities, and will be asked for feedback on town programs and services.

Grace Johnson was chosen as youth mayor in the spring, the first in the role, and worked with Mayor Yvonne Hamlin for the month, attending and speaking at the groundbreaking for the new water treatment plant.

"I’m excited to extend this opportunity to more youth in Collingwood this fall and look forward to sharing knowledge about local government with future participants,” said Mayor Hamlin in a news release.

The student selected for the youth mayor role will get a professional photo wearing the junior chain of office, will earn volunteer hours, and will be given a $250 honorarium for their work.

Applicants must write an essay, record a video essay, or create an artistic rendering showing why they want to be mayor for the month.

Submissions will be accepted until Oct. 18 and the youth mayor will serve from Oct. 28 to Nov. 22.

Submissions may be made directly to the Office of the Mayor using the online submission form or through Collingwood schools.
