The Second Tracks program wrapped up its inaugural winter season on March 9, with great success.
Over the course of the program, 100 local youth experienced thrills they had never imagined — whether it was their very first ski or snowboard lesson or their first ride on a chairlift.
The program was launched in January in partnership with the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, Blue Mountain Resort, and North Shore Ltd., and received an immediate positive response from the local community with spaces for both sessions filling within days.
Second Tracks was founded with the goal of breaking down barriers to make skiing and snowboarding accessible, fostering personal growth and community connections for youth and their families. It also addresses the ongoing youth mental health crisis by providing healthy, outdoor activities, critical to improving the lives of youth.
John Mealey, the founder of Second Tracks and CEO of North Shore Ltd., a lifelong skier who understands the therapeutic impact of outdoor recreation, shared his reflections on the program’s impact.
“There’s nothing like the thrill of flying down a snowy slope to experience a sense of freedom and joy, especially for youth who may not have had access to this kind of opportunity before. It’s about creating moments of happiness that inspire and uplift.”
Jill Tettmann, CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, highlighted the importance of initiatives like Second Tracks.
“This program exemplifies what’s possible when organizations join forces for a common goal. Giving youth access to meaningful experiences like this is at the heart of what we do at the YMCA. It’s about fostering inclusion, building confidence, and strengthening our community,” said Tettmann.
Second Tracks additionally received invaluable support from partners like Blue Mountain Resort and countless regional donors. Dan Skelton, president of Blue Mountain Resort, shared how this collaboration aligns with their vision.
“Programs like Second Tracks demonstrate the lasting impact of meaningful community partnerships. We are thrilled to have been a part of creating these accessible and life-changing experiences for local youth.”
Program organizers would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to everyone who played a role in bringing this program to life. From those who donated gently used equipment and winter gear, to the hard-working and passionate volunteers, together, we’ve positively impacted countless lives and laid a solid foundation for future seasons of Second Tracks.
Looking ahead, Second Tracks is excited to announce that registration for the 2026 season will open on Nov. 1, 2025.
“We can’t wait to welcome more youth to the slopes for another season of discovery, freedom, and fun,” said John Mealey.
