John Nell (1936– 2024) passed away peacefully surrounded by all who loved him July 5, 2024 from Parkinson’s. He was born on June 24, 1936 in the Netherlands to Cornelis and Hendrika (Soede) Nell. After moving to Canada, John, only a young teen, worked hard to support his family. He married his life partner and beloved wife, Carole Hughes, July 8, 1961. John became a talented auto body mechanic and had his own shop. He could build or fix anything, always finding opportunities to expand his technical skills. He built 2 homes and repaired too many vehicles to count. When a career change was needed, he began teaching in Oshawa. In the early 1970s John moved his family to Collingwood to continue his teaching career. He was an auto body teacher and a dedicated cross country ski coach at Collingwood Collegiate Institute for many years. He was also a member of many community groups. Upon retirement he enjoyed many years at the local golf courses perfecting his game. He travelled extensively, exploring new destinations always ready for an adventure. John was a family man, a wonderful husband, brother, father, and the best Opa. He attended every family event and was present at every milestone: school concerts, graduations, hockey games and horse shows.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carole; sons Kirk, Greg (Bonnie), Brent (Lisa); grandchildren Emma, Jack and Oliver; sisters Reta McCort (JD), Agnes Bregman and Corrie Davis (Randy); and brother Peter Nell (Elaine). He is predeceased by parents, Cornelis and Hendrika; siblings Pieter, Cornelis, and Joan Schoenmaker; sister in law Lynda Lane; and daughter in law Tay Nell. He will be remembered with fondness and tons of love for his quick wit and determination.

We would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Lewin and all the amazing support staff that cared for John these last few months.
