Sadly, on Sunday, January 26th, 2025, at the age of 83, Islay, beloved wife of the late John Van der Vechte, passed away peacefully at Collingwood General and Marine Hospital. Loving mother of Jeanne (Morgan) Thompson and Liz (Paul) Lorenz. Dear grandma of Steven and Kevin Thompson.
Spending time with family meant the world to Islay. Along with John at her side, Islay volunteered her time and energy over more than 25 years in devotion to a variety of admirable causes. Known for her endearing wit, boundless kindness, generosity and compassion. She had a real passion for gardening, music and listening to audio books. As a strong-willed woman and despite her extensive vision loss (eventual blindness ensued), she determinedly travelled to the Netherlands, Scotland and various other destinations. Islay was gregarious and loved to socialize.
Thank you to all the doctors and staff involved in her care, especially Krissie who became like a third daughter to her. Lovingly remembered by her extended Bowie and Van der Vechte families and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) would be greatly appreciated. To sign Islay’s Book of Memories, please visit www.chattersonfuneralhome.com
