Police announced a new arrest in a Meaford murder case after one man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and been sentenced to life in prison.

The investigation launched on May 3, 2020 when Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) at the Grey Bruce detachment received a missing person report for 25-year-old Emerson Sprung. Police found Sprung's remains on May 6, 2020.

Matthew McQuarrie pleaded guilty to the murder of Emerson Sprung in court earlier this year. The court heard that Sprung was stabbed 12 times. His body was wrapped in a tarp and buried at a Meaford cemetery. Last month, McQuarrie was sentenced to life in prison.

Police have now confirmed a second person has been arrested and charged as part of the ongoing murder investigation. On July 25, 2024, Laurel Campbell, 32, of Meaford was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder.

She is being held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 19.

Anyone with any information in relation to this investigation is asked to contact the Grey Bruce OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or ontariocrimestoppers.ca.
