Breaking Down Barriers (BDB), a leader in supporting individuals with diverse disabilities, has been a focal point in the community since its founding in 1985. With a commitment to fostering independence, accessibility and inclusion for people with both visible and invisible disabilities, the organization continues to play a crucial role in the community.

This September marks an important milestone as Breaking Down Barriers hosts a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 20 at 1:00 PM. This event celebrates the installation of a new hydraulic lift and recent renovations made possible through funding from an Ontario Trillium Capital Grant.

These accessibility enhancements will enable additional one-on-one support and independent living skills workshops to take place on both levels of the Centre, helping to meet the increased demand for programs and services.

On September 25, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, the community is invited to the Apple of My Eye U-Pick Fundraiser at Kennedy Orchards. This family-friendly event promises an afternoon of apple picking, with the first 35 families receiving 15 lbs of free organic apples, thanks to the support of Mullen and Mullen Mortgage Architects. Donations will significantly support the initiatives at BDB.

On October 5, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, there is a 2nd Annual Bowling Down Barriers Fundraiser at the Georgian Bowl in Collingwood. This inclusive event, open to both teams and individuals, offers a variety of activities. The $50 registration fee covers lane and shoe rentals, refreshments, and lunch. Additionally, there will be a silent auction, 50/50, and Golden Ticket draws.

Contributions through sponsorships or auction donations are also welcomed.

The organization remains dedicated to creating an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Through their ongoing efforts to eliminate barriers and promote independence, they are making a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals with diverse disabilities.
