T
he John Howard Society of Simcoe-Muskoka is proud to present a comprehensive program designed to assist individuals in overcoming barriers to employment due to a criminal record. This five-hour program empowers participants with the skiIls and resources to successfully navigate the job market.
By partnering with Tracks Employment, the “Finding Employment with a Criminal Record” program gains access to tailored job search strategies, employer networks, and local market insights, facilitating the placement of individuals with criminal records into meaningful opportunities.
Program Highlights and Expectations
Participants can expect engaging discussions on overcoming barriers, including identifying and addressing obstacles to employment while developing practical solutions and setting both short and long-term goals. A resume workshop will guide participants in submitting relevant employment information for resume creation or improvement.
Goal setting is a major part of the program. Individuals develop realistic short- and long-term goals to improve their lives and advance toward permanent employment. Participants will be encouraged to take proactive steps toward their goals, including researching and scheduling appointments with relevant agencies. A personality test will also help identify interests, strengths, and potential career paths.
Job-Seeking Tips and Overcoming Barriers
The program offers valuable job-seeking tips and insights from individuals with criminal records who have navigated successful careers. Strategies such as honesty, emphasizing work ethic, and upfront disclosure are highlighted, with advice on framing past experiences in a positive light.
Participants will also gain an understanding of bondability and fidelity bonds in the context of employment, including steps to becoming bondable and recommendations for seeking record suspensions to improve employability.
Overcoming common barriers such as mental health, substance abuse, and lack of education or experience is a key focus. Resources and support are available for individuals facing housing, transportation, and more challenges. Participants can expect to learn the dos and don’ts of interviews, professionalism, and communication tips, and receive guidance on addressing gaps in employment history.
Through a combination of group discussions, practical workshops, and expert insights, the program aims to equip individuals with the confidence, skills, and resources necessary to pursue meaningful employment opportunities despite the challenges posed by a criminal record.
Sessions are conducted at Tracks Employment Services, located at 50 Hume Street, Collingwood, on the second Tuesday of each month. Registration with the John Howard Society of Simcoe-Muskoka is required in advance.
