In the heart of South Georgian Bay, a local charity known as Home Horizon tirelessly supports youth aged 16-24 facing or at risk of homelessness. Their mission is clear: to transform lives and unlock the potential of vulnerable youth. At the core of their efforts lies the Barbara Weider House, a ten-bedroom transition house providing crucial support to those battling homelessness.
Home Horizon's approach is holistic. It offers a range of services designed to address the multifaceted needs of youth. From mental health counselling to educational support, physical wellness initiatives, and life skills development, its programs aim to empower youth to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.
Recent successes underscore the effectiveness of Home Horizon's programs. Over the past six months, two young individuals have transitioned to independent living, with one pursuing postsecondary studies in Ottawa. Inspired by their experiences, these individuals hope to pay it forward by working within the field of social work and supporting others impacted by similar challenges.
"Having worked as an advocate for attainable housing for many years, I recognize how innovative Home Horizon has been, applying global best practices to great effect and success. This is one of the reasons why Blue Mountain Village Foundation has been so proud to support the organization's efforts. Congratulations to the Board of Directors, staff, and all supporters on this significant achievement!" said Andrew Siegwart, President, BLUE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE ASSOCIATION
Home Horizon has partnered with the local Mobile Soup Kitchen to expand its impact. Together, they're hosting the 15th Annual Bowls for Beds Fundraiser—an event with a dual purpose. It supports homeless youth and aids the Mobile Soup Kitchen in its mission to alleviate food insecurity in the community.
Behind the scenes, elementary school children have contributed their creativity by painting bowls, a tangible symbol of hope and solidarity. These bowls are for sale now for $75 with a tax receipt; best of all, $25 from each bowl sale goes directly to the Mobile Soup Kitchen, and supports people in need with a nutritious meal! On June 3rd, a unique bowl crafted by professional artists will be available at auction, with bids starting at $100. We can't wait to show off these artists and the proceeds that will benefit Home Horizon and the Barbara Weider House.
For those eager to lend a hand, there are multiple avenues for support. Whether purchasing bowls, attending events, or making direct donations, every contribution counts. Together, the community can make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable youth.
"Transitional housing is conceptualized as an intermediate step between emergency crisis shelter and permanent housing. It is more long-term, service-intensive, and private than emergency shelters, yet it remains time-limited to stay for three months to three years. It is meant to provide a safe, supportive environment where residents can overcome trauma, begin to address the issues that led to homelessness or kept them homeless, and begin to rebuild their support network.” The Homeless Hub, York University
