2024 NEWSMAKERS: The future of downtown Markdale

With a new hospital open, a school coming soon and apartment building approved, change is on the horizon for a growing Markdale

One of the most prevalent conversations in the Municipality of Grey HIghlands in recent years has been what form the revitalization of downtown Markdale will take.

There is no doubt, the downtown area of Markdale needs some improvements and capital investments. Grey Highlands has been looking at many different options for many years and continues to do so.

Markdale is growing. In recent years it has seen unprecedented growth, with new homes being built in the community.

Markdale has also seen a new hospital open recently. A new elementary school, located close to downtown, will open soon.

A large rental apartment complex proposed for just outside of the downtown core has been approved by council.

It was also just revealed that Chapman’s Ice Cream is planning a major expansion that is going to create new jobs and opportunities in the community.

At some point in the future, a decision will have to be made on what happens with the former Markdale Hospital building in downtown Markdale. What happens next with that property will have huge implications.

There is no doubt, Markdale is changing and will soon look different. What will the revitalization of the downtown look like? How will it proceed?

A local group, Strong Towns Grey Highlands, has made multiple presentations to council about changes needed to parking regulations that could encourage more growth and increased economic activity in the town.

At some point in the near future, Grey Highlands will be developing a master plan for upgrades to King Edward Park in the heart of Markdale. This will be a huge project for the community and represents a massive opportunity for significant investments in the town’s recreational and park spaces.

There is no doubt, the future holds potential for change in the growing Markdale community.
